A field trip inside the garment industry! About one-third of all
clothing worn in North America is imported. But the ready-to-wear industry
still supports small, local companies that produce quality garment primarily by
hand. This video takes you behind the scenes at just such a
company--Jessica Grey Designs, a small Chicago clothing manufacturer.
During the live action video:
- Look over the designer's shoulder as she sketches ideas for next season's
line.
- Sit in on a staff meeting to determine pricing.
- Watch the creation of a master pattern, a first sample, and a
"marker".
- Watch fabric spreading and learn why quality clothes made with attention
to detail are expensive.
- Watch an expert cutter create the garment pieces and bundle them for
sewing.
- See the sewing room where traditional methods produce a final garment.
