What determines our perception of beauty? Do different types of beauty transcend time and fashion or is today’s great beauty tomorrow’s "plain Jane"? Psychologist David Perrett believes that our perceptions of attractiveness may be universal and biological and that certain features of the face may have an instinctive appeal which pleases through time and across culture—large eyes, high cheekbones, a smooth skin texture, a narrow jaw. This program puts these theories to the test by applying his computer analysis to the faces of contestants in a recent beauty contest to see if it is possible to predict the winners.

The faces of some of today’s beautiful people, like super-model Claudia Schiffer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tom Cruise, among others, are also examined. The program talks to experts who support Perrett’s theories as well as to those who strongly disagree, maintaining that beauty is firmly rooted in time and fashion.
