Clothing choices play a role in almost every social problem from school
violence and drugs to poverty and gangs. To many, the word "fashion" means
Paris, models, and high prices. In reality, fashion is basic self-expression
for the only animals on the planet who wear clothes. People don't merely
wear clothes, they wear stories. They use style and fashion to tell the
tale of their lives.
This video explains that for youth, fashion is an attempt to reconcile
two seemingly contradictory messages--"I'm unique" and "I belong."
Watch articulate and youthful commentators explain their own clothing
choices.
Learn:
- Do people judge each other by clothing? Do they enforce unwritten
"rules of dress" or engage in stereotyping?
- Does clothing influence behavior? Do dress codes work? What's cool?
What's hot? Why?
- Where does fashion come from? Who influences how we dress?
- How does a fad become a trend and then a fashion?
- What is the influence of names such as Hilfiger, FUBU, Nike and Levi
and why do we wear the labels on the outside of clothes?
- What do rappers, pro athletes, and celebrities have to do with how
we dress?
- Body piercings--will future generations view even a pierced ear as
hopelessly "square"?
A thoroughly modern, provocative video that will get students talking
about fashion, style, and the stories they wear.
